A LITTLE HISTORY: OUR ROOTS
Rooms at The Pecan is located in Brownsville, TX. A city rich in history, culture, and tradition, on an historic land tract designated by the State of Texas as the first European settlement in South Texas, named Espiritu Santo. Originally owned by a family named Ostenick, the second owners purchased the land and business in 1986. At the time, the unofficially named The Pecan Tree Motel was comprised of 16 cottages lined along the existing road that now serves as the singular entrance to the Rooms At The Pecan. I say “unofficially named” because at the time the current owners went to transfer the legal business documents to their name, to their surprise, there were no legal documents showing the business existed. Regardless, the Pecan trees that blanketed the grounds with their nutty fruit in late spring, were reason enough to honor the unofficial moniker. Over three decades later the business is still thriving and continuing to grow. After a split in partnership in 1988, the current owners, Familia Espinosa - Reyes, have been running the Texas staple, and local gem ever since. In 2001 a fire decimated the main building, and set the establishment on its heels. Broken but not beaten, Rosana Espinosa, a single mother of two, and a native of Tampico, Mexico, forged ahead and begun the first transformation of the current buildings. Her son, Arturo Reyes, a native of Brownsville, has now been in command of daily operations since 2017 and has lead the business to record setting years with a business model focused on customer service. An additional round of renovations were completed between mid 2017 - mid 2018, focusing on updating the interior design elements without compromising the dated infrastructure, and enhancing the already pristine landscape with leisure areas for customers to enjoy. Reyes believes strongly in what he says, “Our rooms are for resting. Living is supposed to be done outside.” A statement he continues to use to breathe life into 5 acres of this thriving Texas business. 33 years of hard work, sacrifice, and love have culminated in an expanding business with plans for new construction in 2022. You can find Arturo on site everyday having a laugh with tourists, travelers, and locals alike, as they walk into the “quasi-industrial” styled lobby, or chasing his two children around the lush evergreen grounds enjoying what his mother and him have managed to cultivate thus far. Welcome to The Pecan. Come in, relax, and stay a while.
